Izzy’s Dog Days of Summer

Isabel and Zoë are so excited to be starting Fun in the Sun Camp! It’s too bad Isabel’s dog, Rollo, isn’t allowed, but the songs and sports, wiener roasts and crafts, swimming and storytelling will surely make up for that, right? Wrong! It turns out, the camp counselors do a big amount of saying no: NO singing your own song, NO running like a penguin, NO trading lunches (even when your sandwich bread is mushy from pickle juice!). Isabel wants to have her own Bigger Amount of Fun in the Sun Camp in the backyard, with Rollo, instead. But will Isabel’s mom let her? And what will they do about Mr. Entwistle, their neighbor who lives on the grumpy side of the fence?

Praise for Izzy’s Dog Days of Summer

“We truly can’t get enough of Izzy and her adventures. Caroline Adderson has created the perfect voice for this loveable and fallible character. The Bee and I read this story together and had many moments where we were laughing out loud making it not exactly the most calming story for a bedtime read but a perfect afternoon in the sunshine one. Short chapters and amazing illustrations make this a story perfect for readers who are just getting used to chapter books and longer format reads.

There is a lovely intergenerational storyline between Izzy and her neighbour Mr. Entwistle and the care and compassion Izzy shows to her neighbour is aspirational. Caroline Adderson perfectly captures the energetic innocence of a young child getting to know her elderly neighbour and the joy that children can bring to their elders.”

Storytime with Stephanie

“Children will easily identify with the loveable characters, the authenticity of the children’s enthusiasms and the frequent comical near disasters. The book also features an elderly grieving, sometimes grumpy neighbour, Mr Entwistle. Izzy’s genuine interest in him and her kindly overtures toward him provide a gentle lesson in kindness and is sensitively handled. In an unconventional family arrangement, Izzy’s live-in caregiver, Rosa, provides wise thoughtful advice in the absence of Izzy’s adoptive mother.”

Canadian Materials

“The third book in The Izzy series, designed for emerging chapter book readers,is a story of friendship, first between the girls, and later between Izzy and her neighbor. The font is large and the language is appropriate for readers at this stage. There are fun illustrations scattered throughout the text that add to the humor of the story. Readers who enjoyed the previous Izzy books will enjoy this installation, but this book also works well as a stand alone.”
